Projects - 2011
Gospel Commission Fellowship
This is a church that has a committed and dedicated leader in Pastor Narin (Cambodian) and pastor Lloyd (Korean who lived most of his life in America). Pastor Narin’s network is wide and far reaching with many contacts both within political, military and legal circles.
Their demographic is much the same as for GBC (upper to middle class). The church was established in 2007 and their vision for is for the church to grow to 1000.
Pastor Naris’s dedication in helping establish the church meant using the only savings he had (US $2,100) to pay for the first 3 months rent of the building they currently meet in. This is an ideal facility for their current needs and provides a large area for church services, other ministries, large open area underneath for meeting after church, children’s, youth ministries and other functions like weddings etc.
International Teams
'International Teams’ Cambodia has a vision to see a new generation of leaders in Cambodia engaged in holistic mission. Their mission is to advance the multiplication of disciples, leaders, and churches in Cambodia through strategic partnerships of leadership development and holistic ministry.
The youth centres both in Phnom Penh and Kampong Cham provide a wonderful opportunity for the gospel, leadership training, English teaching, computer skills, music teaching, sports and social interaction. Funds raised would help provide for much needed resources and sporting equipment which in turn help draw young people to the centres with the opportunity to hear the gospel.
Vietnamese Shalom centre
The word Shalom is Hebrew for peace but not necessarily tranquil but peace in the sense that things are how they should be. There is much that the Vietnamese kids in refugee villages in Phnom Pehn experience that is not how things should be, so Coleen and her team look to provide a space for these children to learn, play, and just be kids. Coleen runs a school program for approximately 80 of the kids in one village on the banks of the Tonle Sap River, which not only gives these kids the chance of an education but also exposes them to the person of Jesus.
There are great needs within these Vietnamese communities who are largely despised by the Cambodian people.
Opportunities exist to help with teaching English and the relocation of their school building. Coleen also needs help to care for and nurture these vulnerable children.
They were proud to show off their homes and where they lived. What they lack is the opportunity to live in a safe and secure environment where they can learn and gain skills to help them find employment so that they can care for their future family.
This project will see local churches mobilised to care for the orphans and vulnerable children in Cambodia’s growing `internally displaced people’ (IDP) camps, where the poor are being sent as de facto refugees in their own country.
Cambodia’s poorest are becoming IDP’s by the thousands because of land grabbing by Cambodia’s rich and powerful – a practice that has become standard operation by the Phnom Penh municipality. Due to economic hardship for IDP’s located outside the city, parents are often forced to leave their children alone, even those five years old and younger, in order to find work. In these cases children are found wandering around the camps, where they can become victim to disease from the open sewage, human traffickers, sexual predators and foreign objects such as drug needles and glass.
This project aims to implement Child Safe Zones which will provide the children with two meals a day, basic medical care, preschool teachings, a place to have fun and exercise, protection and the care of an adult.
Samaritan's Purse
SP is committed to meeting critical needs of victims of war, poverty, famine, disease, and natural disasters while sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Samaritan’s Purse is committed to meeting the needs of under-privileged people through the delivery of practical, every day items and necessities through the local church in Cambodia. We intend to connect with Samaritan’s Purse through the following ministries:
1. Child safe zone – In May 2009 we raised $62,461 which funded a Child Safe Zone providing the children of families who have had their land unfairly grabbed with a pre-school delivering care and education through a local church in Vealsbov. We want to continue to have the opportunity to teach and connect with kids and equip leaders in this preschool.
2. Bio Sand Water filtration – Samaritans Purse have implemented the construction and installation of 15,000 Bio Sand Water filters throughout Cambodia. Each water filter costs between $55 and $110 US dollars - depending on the location of each installation - and is constructed by community leaders alongside local churches. Along with raising finances to fund this project we also have the opportunity to help construct these water filters.
